Joey Votto, Jugador Más Valioso de la Liga Nacional en el año 2010 y figura emblemática de los Rojos de Cincinnati, anunció su retiro del béisbol de las Grandes Ligas (MLB, por sus siglas en inglés).

“Eso es todo. He terminado. Estoy oficialmente retirado del béisbol”, expresó Joey Votto a través de un audiovisual colgado en su cuenta en la red social Instagram.

El video está acompañado de un mensaje donde señala su entrega por el deporte que lo convirtió en uno de los jugadores más respetados y reconocidos en la historia de los Rojos.

“Fui yo mismo en este deporte. Pude ser mi mejor versión. Jugué este deporte con hasta la última gota de mi cuerpo, corazón y mente. Gracias por todo”, expresó Votto, quien agradeció de manera particular al exdirigente Dusty Baker y Scott Rolen, quienes, indicó le “enseñaron cómo ser un profesional”.

El seis veces escogido al Juego de Estrellas por la Liga Nacional, también le agradeció a sus padres, Wendy y Joe, a su familia y a la fanaticada de las Grandes Ligas por su apoyo y recordando cómo los abucheos lo impulsaron a ser mejor jugador.

El gran palmarés de Joey Votto

Votto, quien al momento de su retiro permanecía en los circuitos menores de los Azulejos, equipo de su natal Toronto, jugó cada una de sus 17 campañas con la chaqueta del conjunto de Cincinnati.

En este recorrido, Votto acumuló un promedio de bateo de .294, con 459 dobles, 356 jonrones y 1.146 carreras remolcadas en 2.056 partidos.

Joey Votto conquistó el liderato de dobles en la temporada del año 2011 (40) y encabezó la Nacional en bases por bolas recibidas en cinco ocasiones (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 y 2017), demostrando su conocimiento de la zona de strike, lo que contribuyó a batear en nueve campañas por encima de la marca de los .300.

En el aspecto defensivo, también mostró sus cualidades, conquistando el premio Guante de Oro, como el mejor defensor de la primera base 2011.

Aunque no logró conquistar la Serie Mundial con los Rojos, Votto los llevó en cuatro ocasiones hasta la postemporada.
